Louis Webster Brownell was born in Elk Grove, Wisconsin, October 26, 1853 and departed this life at his home, 301 West Charles Street, Oelwein, Iowa, July 24, 1914, aged sixty years, nine months and 28 days.

He came to Iowa in 1876 and in 1877 was united in marriage to Miss Melvina Housden. To this union four children were born, Mabel Colton, William, Jesse and Mrs. Nellie Preston.

The greater part of his married life was passed on a farm five miles east of Oelwein. He was industrious and happy in his work and suceeded in winning a competence. He moved to Oelwein in 1903 and resided here continuously with the exception of two winters, one passed at Hot Springs, Arkansas and the other in southern California.

For over a year he had been in failing health and during the past ten months has been a terrible sufferer. All was done for him that kind hands and loving hearts could do. The sympathetic wife has been in constant attendance, assisted by a trained nurse. The death angel for whom he had prayed came and he was released from his sufferings.

He was a believer in the christian religion and confessed implicit belief in the the power of Christ to save. He was an honest and upright citizen and was held in high esteem by those with whom he was associated during his active career. He leaves to mourn his departure the faithful and devoted wife, four children, five grandchildren, one brother, three half-brothers, a half-sister, other relatives and a host of friends.
