Henry Charles Gosse, son of Carl Gosse and Augusta nee Draeger, was born in Westburg Township, Buchanan County, Iowa, May 28, 1877 and departed this life at Colonial Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota after a period of intense suffering on Tuesday evening, June 25, 1935 aged 58 years and 27 days.

He was baptized in early infancy in the Lutheran church and attended the public school in the vicinity, later also the religious instruction and was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Jubilee. Some years thereafter the family moved to near Oelwein where he worked for a time on the farm and then engaged in the livery business and during the last thirty years has been the faithful and dependable mail carrier on the rural route leading out of Oelwein. What these years of continued service day in and day out, week by week, year after year, under various conditions of roads and weather, in heat and cold, mud and snow drifts, rains, storms and blizzards have included only those can evaluate who themselves are engaged in this work. Through it all he performed his tasks with faithful regularity and reliability, which was characteristic of all his dealings and relations. He has left his own the priceless heritage of a good name. He was a loyal member of Zion Lutheran Church and a regular attendant at divine services.

On January 2, 1907 he united in marriage with Ruth McConn, who with their three children, Mrs. Evelyn Kelley, Harold Gosse, and Frances Gosse and one grandson, Harold Jr., the pride of his grandfather, survive him. With these are left to mourn his departure his aged mother, Mrs. Augusta Schmidtke, and his three immediate brothers and two sisters; August Gosse of Oelwein, Will Gosse of Rowley, Emil Gosse of Westburg, Mrs. Martha Armstrong of Montague, Michigan and Mrs. Minnie Rogers of Kinderpost, Missouri; as also the following half-brothers and sisters; Ed Gosse of Waterloo, Frank Gosse of Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. Louise Kraupa of Nora Springs, Iowa, Mrs. Bertha Hammelmann of Independence, Fred Schmidtke of Hoquin, Washington, Rudolph Schmidtke of Oelwein, Albert Schmidtke of Oelwein and Mrs. Nathalie Schulbert of Fort Dodge, Iowa and with them a host of other relatives, friends and acquaintances.

The funeral service for Mr. Henry Gosse was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock for the Gosse home on First Avenue, N. W. and at 2:30 o'clock at Zion Lutheran Church. Immediate relatives will accompany the body Saturday to Burlington, Iowa and internment will be made there Saturday afternoon.
