Nettie Cummings (1888-1971)

Mrs. Nettie Cummings was born November 29, 1888 and died at the West Union Hospital on March 12, 1971.

She was born near Arlington, the daughter of G. Edward Smith and Margaret Voshell Smith and grew to adulthood in that vicinity. She received her formal education at Arlington and Upper Iowa College and taught many years in the Fayette county rural schools.

On June 26, 1912 she was united in marriage to Owen D. Cummings at Arlington. To this union five children were born; Mrs. Clarence (Sarah) Ward of Oelwein; Hugh of Independence; Mrs. Carroll (Leota) Turner, Fayette; Mrs. Leo E. (LaVerle) Hutchinson, Normal, Illinois and Mrs. Richard (Celia) Opperman, Wadena.

They resided in rural Arlington, Volga and Fayette most of their married life. She had been a resident of Skinner's Rest Home in Fayette for the last year and one half.

She is survived by her children and fifteen grandchildren; one sister, Pearl Westendorf of Oelwein and a brother Glen of Arlington.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents, two sisters and one great grandson.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Belles-Wright Funeral Home with Pastor Clayton Elsnerry officiating. Interment followed at the Taylorsville Cemetery in Arlington.
