Emma Champlin was born in Columbus, New York, March 15, 1836 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Lawrence, February 21, 1921. On October 28, 1855 she was married to Sidney Lewis and in 1864 the young couple came to Iowa and settled on a farm southeast of Oelwein. Mr. Lewis died in 1872 and the following year Mrs. Lewis came to Oelwein and built one of the first residences erected in Oelwein.

In this property she has made her home ever since. Of four children in the home, only one survives, Mrs. Frank Lawrence, who has so tenderly cared for her mother in her own home these many years. There are three grandchildren and also three great grandchildren.
