A memorial service for Arlo W. Mork, 81, of West Union, Iowa, was held Thursday, Jan. 3, at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union. The Rev. David Grant and Jeff Nicla, intern pastor, officiated.

Interment took place in West Union Cemetery before the funeral service. Casket bearers were Alvin Mork, Brian Mork, Ralph Mork, John Mork, William Lyster and William Dunt.

Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville handled the arrangements.

Arlo died Monday afternoon, Dec. 31, 2007, at the West Union Good Samaritan Center following a lengthy illness.

Arlo Wayne Mork was the son of Abel and Stella (Stolle) Mork. He was born Oct. 24, 1926, in West Union. He baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in West Union.

Arlo attended country school near his home and graduated from West Union High School in 1944. After high school, he continued to help on the family farm.

In October 1944, Arlo joined the U.S. Army Air Force.

On Aug. 1, 1948, he married Betty Elaine Stanz at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in West Union. To this union 10 children were born. The Morks lived on the family farm north of West Union until 1958, when they moved into West Union. After living there for a year, they returned to the farm and resided there until Arlo became a resident of the West Union Good Samaritan Center in 1998.

In addition to farming, Arlo was also a carpenter and a salesman for Pioneer Seed Corn.

He was active in his church and served as a member of the Church Council.

He had also been a member of the North Fayette Booster Club.

Arlo was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty, on Dec. 8, 2007; a daughter, Marsha Mork, in 2005; an infant son, Jeffrey Mork in 1949; a great-grandson; and a sister, Elaine Leiran.

Survivors include his children Alvin (Sharon) Mork of Houston, Texas, Mary (William) Lyster of Spencer, Joyce (William) Dunt of Sun Prairie, Wis., Brian (Jeanne) Mork of Verona, Wis., Ralph (Stephanie) Mork of Madison, Wis., Joan Swan and Greta Mork, both of West Union, and John (Kimberly) Mork of Amery, Wis.

Also surviving are 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Loraine Weston of West Union; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
