A Funeral Mass for Mary E. Berns, 86, of West Union, Iowa, was celebrated Monday, Dec. 31, at Holy Name Catholic Church, West Union. The Rev. Dale Rausch celebrated the Mass.

Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, rural West Union. Casket bearers were Alan Stahr, Joe Dessel, Paul Kaiser, Bob Scott, Alan Lansing and Ernest Johnson.

Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary's sudden death occurred Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union.

Mary Elizabeth Berns, daughter of John and Florence (Adams) Berns, was born Jan. 26, 1921, in West Union.

Following her graduation from West Union High School, Mary attended the College of St. Theresa in Winona, Minn.

She served her country by enlisting in the WAVES during World War II.

During her younger years, Mary worked for Kretz's Store in Dubuque.

Her memberships included Holy Name Catholic Church, Rosary Society, and 50 years as a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Mary had been a longtime resident of Prairie View Residential Care Facility, rural Fayette.

Preceding her in death were her parents; an infant brother, Lawrence; and a sister, Juliet.

Mary is survived by her cousins Helen Molumby, Kathryn Hinsenbrock, and Judy Meskel, all of West Union, and Isabella Gay of Madrid, Ia.; and other relatives.
