William W. Gay was born in Newton County Mississippi, June 4, 1859 and departed this life August 6, 1934 at his home 540 Eighth Street, S. W., Oelwein, Iowa.

He was the only son of June Bethony and Columbus Franklin Gay. At the age of four, he with his mother moved to Davenport, Iowa, his father having previously entered the Civil War from which he did not return.

In 1866 Mrs. Gay married Clement Hughson. With his mother and step father, William W. moved to Oelwein where he has since made his home.

In 1887 he was united in marriage to Miss Alice E. Sanders. To this union were born six children, one baby daughter, Mary, having departed this life in infancy.

He leaves to mourn his death besides his faithful and devoted wife, three sons, Ira C. of Beloit, Wisconsin, Earl F. and William J. and two daughters, Mrs. Ivan Johnson and Mrs. Hugh Higgins all of Oelwein, two half sister, Mrs. R. M. Plummer of Alhambra, California and Mrs. W. S. Vaughn of Henning, Minnesota, one half brother, Floyd Hughson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his mother, step father and one half brother Henry Hughson having preceded him in death. He leaves a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. We shall miss him but our loss is his gain.
