Mrs. John Schatz, 79, died at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 17. Her death came somewhat suddenly and unexpectedly at the last, though it was known that she was in a serious condition for a week or more before, and her illness had really begun two years ago.

Her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Wagner, were visiting in California, and could not reach here without making undue delay for the funeral, so they did not come.

Mrs. Schatz's entire life had been spent in the West Union community. As Mabel Percy Doty, the daughter of Andrew and Anna (Higgs) Doty, she was born Feb. 20, 1864, in Windsor township. She was united in marriage Feb. 19, 1885, to Elwell J. Crawford, who died Aug. 1, 1901. To them two daughters were born: Eva, Mrs. Leonard Wagner, and Ruth, Mrs. Ray Fels, both of West Union.

She was married in September 1925, to John Schatz, and their home has been in the city continuously since.

She united with Bethel Presbyterian church Nov. 22, 1902, and continued a faithful and active member so long as her health permitted. She also was a member of the Eastern Star chapter.

Surviving are her husband; the two daughters; two brothers, Frank Doty of Humboldt, Kan., and B. H. Doty of Des Moines; four grandsons; and two great grandchildren. Two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

The funeral was conducted by the Rev. G. W. Ukena, her pastor, from the Presbyterian church at 2 p.m. Saturday.
