Henry Drewes 1863-1943

Henry Drewes, 79, died at 8:15 pm. Sunday at the West Union hospital, West Union, Iowa. While he had suffered for some time from a malady known to be fatal, he was up and around until a week before his death and in the hospital for only four days.

A native of Germany, he resided in Fayette County for 66 years.

The funeral will be conducted today, Wednesday, by the Rev. C. Bartels at 1:30 at the Burnham Funeral Home and 2 pm. at Zion Lutheran Church.

Surviving are five children: John D. Drewes, north of West Union; William H. Drewes, Forest City; Hulda, Mrs. Forest Cary, Osage; Alta, Mrs. Roy Torson, West Union; Inez, Mrs. George Stamp, Lake Mills. His wife died in 1911.

As the youngest of five children he was born June 5, 1863, at Bergkamp, near Cadenberg, Hanover, Germany. He was baptized as an infant. At the age of 13, he came to America and made his home with his sister, Mrs. Henry Koester, Eldorado. A year later he was confirmed by the Rev. G. Blessin. He as married March 4, 1889, to Adeline Ney.

He farmed five years at Eldorado, then for many years north of West Union, and retired to this city in 1930. He ws in good health until about four years ago.

Mr. Drewes had the substantial every day virtues, worked and saved and met his obligations, sought no preferment, but discharged his duties in an honest, kind, unassuming way, as a man of integrity and honor, bringing him the respect and good will of all. He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church, transferred his membership to Zion Church when he moved to West Union, and seldom missed attending the worship service.
