Alice Sanders Gay (1867-1949)

Alice Eliza Sanders, daughter of William and Mary King Sanders, was born November 17, 1867 on a farm near Grove Hill postoffice, Bremer County. She died January 18, 1949.

At the age of 13, her parents moved south of here to what is known as the Walker farm. In 1886 she was married to William Walton Gay. Six children were born; one girl Mary, died in infancy; Earl F. of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Ira C., of Beloit, Wisconsin, Mrs. Ivan Johnson, Mrs. Hugh S. Higgins and William J.. all of Oelwein.

In June 1885 she joined the Freewill Baptist church here. In June 1920, the Sanders' joined the Gospel Baptist church, and at the time of her death she was a member of the First Baptist church. Mr. Gay died August 6, 1934.

Services were held at the First Baptist Church January 21, the Rev. Perron officiating. Burial was at Otsego Cemetery.
