Elsie Viola Torkelson

Elsie Viola Torkelson, 85, of Elgin, IA died Tuesday night, Feb. 29, 2000 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, IA, following a brief illness. She was born August 24, 1914 in Clayton Co., IA to John and Louisa (Sutter) Butikofer. She was raised and educated in the area attending rural schools.

She was united in marriage to William Torkelson on November 3, 1938 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, IA. Together they farmed east of Elgin until moving into town upon retirement.

Survivors include her son William "Bill" Torkelson, Elgin; two step-daughters, Mrs. Leo (Amy Lou) Olesen, Tempe, AZ, and Mrs. Albert (Ione) Dennler, Elgin; a step-son, Sylvan Torkelson and his wife Mary of Elgin; eleven grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; a brother, Lewis Butikofer, and his wife Ernestine of Lakeland, FL; two sisters, Eunice Schlee of Postville and Eleanor Loftsgard of Elgin; two brothers-in-law, George Schupbach, Postville, and Lowell Strong, Cedar Rapids; and a sister-in-law, Donna Butikofer.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband in 1979; her parents; a daughter in infancy; two brothers, John Jr. and Lawrence Butikofer; and three sisters, Helen Schupbach and Mildred Schupbach and Ona Lee Strong.

Funeral services were Monday, March 6, 2000 at 1 p.m. at Highland Lutheran Church, rural Elkader, Iowa, with the Rev. Galen Kuhens officiating. Interment was in Highland Cemetery, rural Elkader, Iowa.

Casketbearers were Scott and Kevin Torkelson, Larry Miles, Kevin Lembke, Dan Winter and Jeffrey McMillan.
