Bertha Sheldon Olmstead the only daughter of Edward Olmstead and Martha Weeden, was born at Chester, New York, June 24, 1858.
She came to Iowa with her daughter* and two brothers in 1865 and located at Independence, Iowa, later moving to Fayette County, where she has lived until her death.
On November 29, 1878, she was united in marriage to H. W. Damon, who still survives. To this union, nine children were born, seven of them still living; Edward, Kate (Mrs. Herb Swarts), George, Fred, Nellie (Mrs. W. J. Conkey) and Ralph all of Oelwein and Harry of Brookings, South Dakota, also twenty grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
She has been a faithful wife and mother and a dear friend to all who knew her. She was one of the faithful members of the American Legion Auxiliary and W. R. C. Also a member of the Home Department of the Presbyterian church.
She has been a patient sufferer for nearly three years. On August 28th she suffered a stroke of paralysis and since that time has been confined to her bed. On November 22 at 8 a.m. she answered the call of her Lord and passed on to where suffering is unknown.
Funeral Services were held Sunday after at the Presbyterian church, Rev. Hauter officiating. Burial was made in Woodlawn cemetery.
