Leonard Harold Strong
1980Leonard Harold Strong, eldest son of Charles Lester and Amelia Bunting Strong, was born April 18, 1900, on the Strong family farm in Illyria Township south of Elgin.
He received his education at Illyria Dist. No. 2 and completed a business course at Valdar College in Decorah.
On June 1, 1927 he was united in marriage to Zella King at the home of her parents by Rev. E. J. Starr. They established their home on a farm in Illyria Township, not far from the place of his birth.
Five children were born to the couple; Charles, San Gabriel, Calif.; Myrten, Elkader; Kenneth, rural Elgin; Arthur, DeWitt and Iantha, Cedar Rapids.
As a youth Harold became a member of the Illyria Community Church, serving the church in various ways through the years. He was always interested in community affairs, serving on the Wadena Creamery Board, Illyria Township School Board and was first chairman of the Fayette County Soil Conservation organization. He was a long time member of Fayette County Farm Bureau and took an active interest in politics as long as his health permitted. He was a member of Elgin Senior Citizens. His home, his family, his music and his search for knowledge were his prime interests in life.
He died Sunday, March 9, at Palmer Memorial Hospital and was preceeded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, his five children, nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, his brother Reynold, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Funeral services were held March 12 at Illyria Community Church, rural Elgin, with the Rev. John McCorkell officiating Mrs. John Smith was organist with a quartet composed of Ed Klingman, Clarence Shori, Arden Greener and Harlan Gillespie furnishing music.
Pallbearers were Charles Strong, Myrten Strong, Arthur Strong, Kenneth Strong, Duane Strong and Mike Dinan. Interment was in the Illyria Cemetery.
