Mary Elizabeth Hyde was born on February 11, 1868 on a farm in Clayton county, Iowa and died at Russell, Iowa, February 4, 1912, aged 43 years, 11 months and 24 days. She was married to A. J. Mettlin March 17, 1903. Mrs. Mettlin had been a member of the Presbyterian church for many years and at the time of her death was a faithful and loyal member of the church in Russell.

Mrs. Mettlin was greatly admired and beloved by all that knew her for her noble qualities of heart and mind, and especially by her sisters in the church who desire to express their deep sense of her personal work as an active, capable and faithful co-worker with them in all the activities of their church life and also their feeling of personal loss in her death.

Mrs. Mettlin leaves besides her husband and her son George and daughter Laura, five brothers and a large circle of friends to mourn her loss but also rejoice in her gain.

She made a brave fight and did everything possible to stay the approach of death, but at the last fearlessly met the dark angel. She got her house in order, made arrangements for the last rites, and calmly, prayerfully, even anxiously awaited the end. It may truly be said of her, "She was ready when the hour of her departure came and gladly lay down to her peaceful rest".

The body was brought to Oelwein and the last services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. F. Y. Nichols officiating. Friends who had known her when a resident of this city were in attendance to show the esteem in which she was held, and following the services interment took place in the city cemetery.

from Oelwein Register; February 1912
Note - burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein
