Sarah McLachian Manning was born in Woodville, Canada, March 28, 1850. She was the daughter of John and Ann McLachian. She came with her parents to Iowa in March 1870, and was married to Samuel J. Manning March 28, 1877, and died at her home in Stanley, Iowa, April 24th, 1912. To them were born three children, Mrs. Alexander Campbell, Effie and Johnnie who preceded her to the better land August 13, 1897.

She gave her heart to Christ at the age of seventeen and united with the Canadian Presbyterian church in Woodville, Canada. After coming to Iowa she united with the First Presbyterian church, Independence in 1870 and afterwards joined the United Presbyterian congregation at Putnam in 1872 and later the United Presbyterian church in Oelwein. Mrs. Manning was a charter member of the Union church at Stanley, also a charter member of the Ladies' Aid Society, and efficient teacher in the Sabbath school for many years and ative and faithful in all lines of Christian work.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 29th in the Union church and were attended by a large number of relatives and friends. The pastor was assisted by Rev. T. Phelps of Independece and Rev. H. Irvine of Jesup. Interment in Otsego Cemetery.
