H. D. Manning was born in Canada, April 28, 1832. He came with his parents to Illinois in 1843. He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah C. Burroughs in 1856, and with her removed to Iowa in 1863, where he settled upon the farm on which they lived until the present time. Five children were born to this union, three of whom are still living, Mrs. A. J. Johnson, J. H. Manning, and Miss Carrie Manning.

For nearly a half century he had resided in this vicinity, had passed through the privations of early pioneer days before there was a railroad in the county, before Oelwein was thought of. He was well known by the older residents pf this part of Fayette county, bore an honorable reputation. He had lived out the allotted time of man, fell asleep at the age of 71 years, 1 month and 23 days, and lies buried near where nearly all his life was passed.
