Mrs. J. R. Day, whose maiden name was Emma Louise Hughson, was born on a farm near Lyons, N.Y., April 9, 1842. Her mother, Hephyebah Ann Alden was a descendent of Joseph, second son of Priscillia and John Alden, and through the grandmother, who was Poddock of Plymouth, Mass., was a direct decendant of Elder William Brewster and of Colonial Governor Thomas Price, also Mayor Jorn Freeman of King Phillips War. Her father, Clement Hughson, was of equally sterling Puritan ancestry. In 1857 she came with her parents, two brothers and two sisters to Maquoketa, Iowa. There Emma Louise taught school at the age of fifteen and when sixteen married John B. Day and moved to Fayette County, later going to Otsego where Mr. Day ran a store for a time then they removed to Maynard and Mr. Day was proprietor of the Maynard Hotel. After a time they went on a claim in Dakota and in 1913 removed to Fayette, Iowa, where they remained until death claimed them. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Day; E. E. Day of Fayette; Mrs. J. S. Gipson of Ryan, Oklahoma; Mrs. George L. Davis of Twin Falls, Idaho; Mrs. E. E. Ripley, of Filer, Idaho; George H. Day of Lemmon, South Dakota; Maude E. Day of Fayette, Iowa and Mable E. Day who was called to the Father at the age of 15 to the life beyond. Shortly after the death of Mr. Day in 1914 in Fayette Mrs. Day had a serious illness and since that time has been an invalid. All dearly loved her for she was ever cheerful and smiling through the trials of life and the last three years of her illness. About ten days ago Mrs. Day suffered a stroke of paralysis and on Thursday, June 7, she passed to that beyond where there shall be no death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain. The funeral services were from the M. E. church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. A. Young, assisted by Rev. Cassidy and burial was in the family lot in Otsego cemetery.
