Sarah Francis Carpenter was born in New York near Buffalo, April 21, 1847. She came to Iowa with her parents when quite young. They located southwest from Oelwein about 7 miles, where she grew to womanhood. On April 18, 1866, she was united in marriage to Samuel Ross. Mr. and Mrs. Ross resided in Iowa continuously during their married life most of the time in this vicinity. Mr. Ross preceeding Mrs. Ross in death 21 years ago at Iowa Falls. Mrs. Ross came to Oelwein six years ago to make home with her daughter Mrs. Henry E. Ross, she spent the past month visiting at the home of her daughter Mrs. Henry Bunger near Hazleton where she departed this life Sunday A. M. December 7, 1924 at the age of 76 years, 9 months and 17 days. Mrs. Ross death was unexpected. She leaves to mourn three sons and five daughters besides her sister Mrs. D. L. Walker of Denver, Colorado, and one brother, Warren S. Carpenter of Spencer, Iowa and a host of relatives and friends. Short services were held at the Bunger residence and funeral services from the Christian church in Oelwein, where she was a faithful, earnest worker, December 10, 1924. Burial beside her husband in Oran township cemetery 5 miles west of Oelwein, Iowa.
