Harold Mettlin, son of Charles and Mary Mettlin, was born April 5, 1907 on a farm northwest of Stanley. He came to Oelwein with his parents in 1918 and entered and graduated from the Oelwein schools. His summers during his school days were spent on the farm.

On July 8, 1933 he was married to Helen Brown of Hazleton. After a short stay at Oelwein, they moved to Sydney, Montana and then to Mt. Ranier, Maryland, which has been his home since that time. Here he was in the employ of Woodward and Lothrop.

Near midnight, Wednesday, May 14, 1952, he was crossing a highway, he was struck by a car and instantly killed. He had enjoyed good health with the exception of several months in 1937 when he was in a sanitarium.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oelwein and later became a member of the Methodist church at Mt. Ranier, Maryland.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, and daughter, Elaine of Mt. Ranier, Maryland; his father, Charles Mettlin of Oelwein; three sisters, Mary (Mrs. Fred Blech) of Oelwein, Jennie (Mrs. Milton Brewer) of Kansas City, Missouri, and Effie (Mrs. Norman Frye, Jr.) of Independence, Iowa; two brothers, Earl Mettlin of Kirkwood, Illinois and Floyd of Perry, Iowa; nephews, nieces and friends and associates. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1940.

Short services were held at Mt. Ranier, Maryland on Friday, May 16 and on Monday, May 19 funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church of Oelwein in charge of the pastor, Rev. L. W. Hauter. Mrs. Glenn Johnson and Mrs., Robert Hines, accompanied by Mrs. L. E. Hilsabeck provided the music. Burial was in the Mettlin family lot in the Otsego Cemetery, southeast of Oelwein. The casket bearers were Ora Leary, Bruce Ward, LaVern Luther, Ben Davis, Wendell Clark and Frank Brownell.
