Helen M. Cowell, 93, of Hazleton, Iowa, died Sunday afternoon, Nov. 18, 2007, at Oelwein Healthcare Center after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 23, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hazleton. Interment was in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Hazleton.

Floral Hills Funeral Home, Oelwein, was in charge of arrangements.

Helen Mae (Walker) Cowell was born Sept. 2, 1914, in Oelwein to John and Gertrude (Cannon) Walker.

She was a graduate of Oelwein High School.

On June 8, 1935, Helen was united in marriage with Howard Becker Cowell at the Trinity United Methodist Church parsonage in Hazleton. The couple farmed with Howard's parents south of Bryantsburg. Over the years they farmed in the Independence, Aurora, and Hazleton areas.

Helen worked for a few years as a cook at Oelwein Junior High School.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard, on Nov. 24, 1996; a great-granddaughter; and four sisters.

Survivors include four children, Barbara (Don) Stubbs of Garner, Jean (Jim) Snively of Clarion, Tom (Barbara) Cowell of Fairbank, and Dale (Judy) Cowell of Waseca, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Additional survivors include three sisters, Loretta Smith of Oelwein, Florence Temple of Irving, Texas, and Shirley (Wayne) Stockwell of Indianapolis, Ind.; three brothers, Russell Walker of Buffalo, Wyo., Robert (Ruth) Walker of Arlington, and James (Elaine) Walker of Oelwein; nieces and nephews.

A memorial fund has been established.
