Jonathan O'Neel, son of Willis and Mary O'Neel was born December 31, 1844 in Ripley County, Indiana, where he spent his boyhood days and where at the age of eighteen years he enlisted with Co. E. 83rd Regiment, Indiana Volunteers in the Civil War.

He was wounded and forced to go home on a furlough. After his recovery he returned and fought faithfully for his country until his discharge, June 1865.

Soon after his discharge he came to Fayette County, Iowa near where the city of Oelwein is now. Soon after coming to Iowa he with some others went to Oregon with a team of oxen. The greatest share of his life was spent in Iowa and Oregon.

He never married and the latter part of his life was spent with his sister, Mrs. Jesse W. Ross and her son Henry H. Ross where he departed this life, June 1, 1925, in his eighty-first year.

He leaves to mourn his loss four sisters, Mrs. Sarah Steggall, Mrs. Rachel Steggall, Mrs. Amanda Ross, and Mrs. Phoebe Moore of Oelwein, and one brother, Robert O'Neel of Carlton, Oregon, besides numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one sister Jane, and two brothers, David O'Neel and Samuel, who died in infancy.

The last services were held Tuesday, 2 p.m. in the Christian chruch, conducted by the pastor, I. E. Wade. The W. R. C. and American Legion, Ross Reid Post No. 9, attended in a body.

The services at the cemetery were under the auspieces of the American Legion.
