Lucy Luella Platt, daughter of Elvira and Josiah Platt, was born near Oelwein, November 19, 1862, and passed to her eternal Home February 2, 1936.

Her entire life was spent in and near Oelwein where she formed a large circle of friends. May 28, 1902 she was married to George L. Shelson who preceded her in death in August 1928. To this union was born one son, Ronald Platt Shelson, who with his faithful wife, tenderly cared for the mother through her long illness.

Mrs. Shelson accepted the Saviour and was baptized into the fellowship of the First Baptist church of Oelwein under the ministry of Rev. Abramson. She has filled faithfully and acceptably the positions of Sunday school teacher, president of the Women's Work; deaconess, and at the time of her death, was an honorary deaconess. For many years she was an active member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. She was also a member of the Daughters of Civil War Veterans. Her life was spent in loving service for others with little thought of her own comfort.

She leaves to mourn her passing her son and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Shelson and their two children, George Robert and Joan; one brother R. A. Platt and two sisters, Mrs. O. A. Kinsell of
Council Bluffs and Mrs. J. W. Potts of Oelwein. One sister, Emma Estella, having died in early life. Many relatives, friends and neighbors will greatly miss her. This is writing the brief record of a noble life, but the real record is written in the hearts of those who knew and loved her best.

The funeral service was held in the First Baptist Church Tuesday February 4, 1936 at 2:00 P. M., conducted by her pastors, Rev. and Mrs. C. E. Hillis. Mrs. Ellen Ervin and Miss Kate Kappes accompanied by Mrs. Katheryn Williams, sang "Beautiful Isle" and "in the Garden". The Daughters of the Civil War Veterans conducted their memorial service. The body was laid to rest in the Oran Cemetery.
