Carl Richard Oldenburg, Jr., son of Carl and Florence (Ruestman) Oldenburg, was born October 26, 1936, at Streator, Illinois. He became a child of God through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Minonk, Illinois. He also confirmed his faith there in the eighth grade. He attended school in Long Point and Flanagan, Illinois.

In 1952, his family moved to the West Union, Iowa area, where Carl graduated from high school in 1954. On January 13, 1957, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Fels. To this union three daughters were born.

Carl was a life long farmer until his illness forced his retirement. A farm machinery sale was held January 15, 2000. For 33 years, he was a school bus driver for the North Fayette School district. Carl enjoyed motorcycling, summer vactions at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri and winter vacations in Florida. In 1965, he was awarded the Outstanding Young Farmer Award by the West Union Jaycees. He has been a member of Zion Lutheran Church of West Union since 1957.

On March 6, 2000, Carl died of leukemia at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, at the age of 63 years, four months, and nine days. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Don, in 1996.

Carl is survived by his wife, Carolyn; three daughters and their spouses: Carla & Mark Ripp of Middleton, Wisconsin, Cristin & Bob Marshall of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Caryn & Todd Crandall of Des Moines, Iowa; ten grandchildren, a sister, Arlene (Mrs. Harold) Rients of Oelwein, Iowa; and a sister in law, Barbara Oldenburg of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
