Charles Martin Fels, son of Carl and Rosa (Wolfe) Fels, was born April 2, 1918, at Auburn, Iowa. He became a child of God through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on May 5, 1918, at the St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Eldorado, Iowa. Following catechism instruction, he confirmed his fath at the St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Eldorado in 1932.

He graduated from the West Union High School on May 28, 1937. He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific.

On February 19, 1946, he was united in marriage to Mildred Elizabeth Bruening at the Zion Lutheran Church of West Union. This union was blessed with five children.

He farmed in Fayette County his entire life. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and the American Legion. Since 1945, he has been a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Charles died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, May 10, 1983, at the age of 65 years, one month and eight days. Preceding him in death were his parents and a daughter, Charlene Marie Fels.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; a daughter, Jeannie Arlys (Mrs. Harvy) Sass of Waukon, Iowa; three sons: Robert Martin Fels of Wurtheim, Germany, Roger Bernard Fels, and Jeffory Charles Fels, both of West Uion; eight grandchildren; a brother, Henry Fels and three sisters, Mrs. Irene (Howard) Russler, Mrs. Vera (Carl) Wagner, Mrs. Delores (James) Friederich, all of West Union.
