MRS. JOSEPH HENRY (Celia Clara Martie) WANDER

Celia Clara (Martie) Wander, the daughter of Louis Martie and Louisa (Schneider) Martie, was born March 8, 1906, on a farm in Fayette County, near Elgin, Iowa. She passed away Tuesday, October 31, 2000 in the Good Samaritan Center at West Union, Iowa. She had reached the age of 94 years, seven months and 23 days.

She attended the rural Sunny Dale School District No. 4 in Marion Township, Clayton County, where she received a certificate for perfect attendance and punctuality for a period of 16 months, of which she was very proud. Celia also attended the Elgin High School. She was baptized and confirmed as an adult at the West Clermont Lutheran Church.

She worked for several families in the Elgin area and then at the hotel in Elgin. After the hotel in Elgin was sold, she went to work at the hotel in Postville, where she met her future husband, Joe. They were married on December 17, 1930, at the parsonage in Decorah by the Reverend Glesne. Five children were born to this union, Gene, Gerald, Duane, Linda, and Keith. They farmed in the Clermont area. Celia raised and sold raspberries and strawberries and baked pies for a local restaurant. She also had a large garden and did a great deal of canning.

Celia was active in the church and the community even until her ninetieth birthday. She loved to crochet, and when she was 90 she made a wall hanging for the church in memory of Joe, which read: "West Clermont Lutheran Church." She also belonged to the Happy Valley Garden Club. Celia enjoyed making quilts, knitting and crocheting. She loved to have her family come to visit and to cook for them. Celia became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in West Union on October 7, 1996.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joe, who died October 19, 1992, a son, Gene, a great granddaughter, Janice Wander and a great grandson, Nicholas Wander, a brother, Fred Martie and two sisters, Marie Reierson and Lydia Butikofer, and a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Wander.

Surviving are her children, Gerald Wander and his wife, Sandra, Linda and her husband, Jerry Anderson, and Keith Wander, all of Clermont, and Duane Wander and his fiancee, Pam McInnes, of Riverside, CA, a daughter-in-law, Margaret Wander of Mason City, IA, 11 grandchildren, Jack, Allen and Kent Wander and Lynn Hedrick; Lori Bushman and Mike Lantz, Randy Wander, Cindy Morales and Kim Weatherred; Tami Robrock and Shane Anderson; 23 great grandchildren, Ashley and Adam Wander, Dusty and Lissa Hedrick, Amber, Desiree and Sabre Wander, Travis, Nathan and Jared Wander, Tifani, Tyler, and Tony Bushman, Cory Wander, Melissa and Shawna Morales; Nicole, Jamie and Adam Weatherred, Jodie and Thomas Miller; and one great great grandchild, Blake Gusinsky.
