MY GRANDPA
My grandpa was a man I knew since I don't know when.
He'd take us all on fishing trips, then bring us home again.
We'd cast and sit and sit and cast for hours end on end,
Then with a pull, a tug I guess, the pole began to bend.
Then with a flop it fell from the hook, but never with dismay,
He'd smile at me and with a wink, "We"ll be back someday."
And as the years flew by and I grew up and aged with years,
It's times like that I remember most when fighting back the tears.
For it was you who taught me the important things; to bait a hook,
to walk with pride, to take the ups and downs in stride.
For to me you're not just anywhere, but in the place you had from the start.
A place reserved for you in my heart.
Your grandson, Mike.
