Jess Lawrence Taylor

Jess Lawrence Taylor, son of Joseph Edward and Sarah Ann (Johnston) Taylor, was born Feb. 10, 1903 in Delaware County, near Colesburg, Iowa. He died Monday, April 25, 1994 in Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, Iowa. He was 91.

He was baptized and confirmed June 13, 1963 by the Rev. E. W. Hilgeman. He attended the local school near his home. Jess started working as a farm hand in 1914 at Tomson, Iowa. From there his work took him to many locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. In later years, Jess became known as a fence builder. He built many of the fences in the Clermont area. He had also been employed at the Elgin Canning Factory. He was a member of the East Clermont Lutheran Church. He had also been a member of the Whistling Bit Saddle Club and the Volga River Riders. Jess Loved to ride horses and to be outdoors.

On Oct. 11, 1976 he was married to Wavia Smale in the Bethel Presbyterian Church at West Union by the Rev. Richard Menzel.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wavia, who died in 1983; a brother, Joe Taylor; two sisters, Esther Bril and Rose Severson; and a half-sister, Adeline Boorom. Surviving is a stepson, Wayne Smale of Carson, Calif., and a step-daughter, Audrey Lambrt of Santa Clara, Calif.; a brother, James Taylor of Clermont; a sister, Elsie Cook of Cedar Falls; a half-sister, Julia Landow of Cedar Falls, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 28, 1994 at the East Clermont Lutheran Church, rural Clermont, the Rev. Harry Peterson officiating. The organist was Darlene Nuehring, and a duet was sung by Clarence Amundson and Bonnie Haack. The Schutte Funeral Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the West Union City Cemetery. Casket bearers were Sylvan Taylor, Larry Taylor, Quinton Olson, Karl Klemp, Henry Follet, and Orville Berg.
