Sophia Louise Wenger

Funeral services for Sophia Wenger were held on Monday, April 2, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Gary Catterson officiating. Services were held at Wadena Community Presbyterian Church, with burial at Wadena Cemetery, Wadena, Iowa.

Sophia Louise (Frey) Wenger, the youngest child of Martin and Mary (Leonhart) Frey, was born December 7, 1894 at Wadena, Iowa. She receiver her education in rural school, graduated from Wadena High School in 1911 and attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette. She taught in rural school before she was married.

On November 26, 1913 Sophia was united in marriage to Chris J. Wenger at West Union, Iowa and to this union were born two daughters and two sons. They farmed in the Wadena and Elgin area. Sophia enjoyed cooking, reading and being with her grandchildren. In her later years Sophia made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Winfield (Betty) Masonhall.

Sophia passed away on March 29, 2001 at the Good Samaritan Home in Postville at the age of 106 years, 3 months and 22 days. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son-in-law, Lee Brainard; one granddaughter, Linda Wenger, two sisters, Lissettia Wilson and Ella Humphry; and two brothers, Robert Frey and William Frey.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Donna Mae Brainard of Sedalia, MO, and Betty Ruth and her husband, Winfield Masonhall of Postville; two sons, John Martin and his wife, Margaret, of Lafayette, MN, and Robert F. and his wife, Selma, of Downers Grove, Ill; 15 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
