Mary Irene (Frey) Wheeler

Mary Irene (Frey) Wheeler, daughter of William and Hazel Geneva (Perkins) Frey, was born August 23, 1917 in Wadena, Iowa. She attended Stone #8 Country School. She helped on the farm and did housework for neighbors.

On February 8, 1941, Irene was united in marriage to Archie Wheeler and the ceremony took place at the Frey home. To this union was born one son, Richard, in October of 1942. Archie and Irene lived and farmed all of their married life near Wadena until June of 1999 when they entered the Good Samaritan Home in Waukon. Irene enjoyed her time at the Good Samaritan Home and especially enjoyed her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, living on the farm, and gardening. She was a lifelong member of Wadena Presbyterian Church.

Irene died on January 31, 2002 at the Good Samaritan Home in Waukon after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her son Richard in January of 1970 in a farm accident; her parents; one brother, John Frey; and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Medberry.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Archie; four grandchildren, Teresa and John Condon of Decorah, Tracy and Steve Henriksen of West Salem, WI, Todd and Josey Wheeler of Strawberry Point, and Raymond Troy Wheeler of Columbus, OH; daughter-in-law Erma Jane Bernard of Holmen, WI; one step-granddaughter, Dawn Bernard, of Spencer, WI; five great-grandchildren, one step-great-granddaughter; 2 brothers, Warren (Berle) Fray of West Union and Linday (Betty) Frey of Postville; one sister, Dora Medberry of Elgin; one sister-in-law Colleen Frey of Fayette and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Services were held on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Community Presbyterian Church in Wadena, Iowa with Rev. Tom Bond officiating. Pallbearers were Todd Wheeler, Kenneth Barker, Alvin Frey, Raymond Troy Wheeler, Bill Matthiesen, and Jack Frey. Interment was at Wadena Cemetery, Wadena, Iowa.
