Lucy C. Winter

Lucy Claudina Martha (Miene) Winter was born January 31, 1902 on a farm in Frankville Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Reinhardt) Miene. She was baptized on June 30, 1902 at St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville and was confirmed at the same church on September 3, 1916. She attended rural schools and graduated from the Postville High School and the Normal Training Course on June 4, 1920. She taught in the rural school at Dover Township #4 for several years.

On January 31, 1923, Lucy married Walter B. Winter at the farm home of her parents near Postville. They were the parents of Marcella, Richard, Dorothy, Ralph and Loren. Lucy and Walter farmed most of their married years near Eldorado.

Lucy was a member of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Eldorado, and the Love Circle of the WELCA, the Hospital Auxiliary and the Friendly Homemakers. Lucy loved doing crafts and wrote two books about the memories of her life. She was a resident of the Good Samaritan Care Center at West Union since August 1992. She died on Wednesday, April 19, 2000 at the age of 98.

Survivors include one son, Richard Winter of Calmar, one daughter, Dorothy Fink of Maynard, 14 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, four step great-great grandchildren, a son-in-law, Robert Reinking, two sisters-in-law, Henrietta Winter and Marie Miene, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter (on November 25, 1973), two sons in infancy, Ralph (on July 17, 1941) and Loren (on February 12, 1943), a daughter Marcella Reinking (on April 10, 1997), three grandchildren, infant boy Reinking, Cinda Winter and Allen Winter, two sisters, Alma Kuehling and Florence Everman, two brothers, Otto Miene and Fred Miene, and a son-in-law, Lyle Fink.

Funeral services were held at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eldorado, Iowa on April 22, 2000, with Pastor Dennis A. Hugdahl officiating.

Pall bearers were Mark Schmadeke, Tom Schmadeke, Chad Schroyer, Joshua Schneider, Jeff Fink and Tim Fink.
