CLERMONT, Iowa: Melba White of here was killed in a one car accident on the south edge of town late Saturday.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office said she apparently lost control of her car as she was going north on county road W-51, which goes from Elgin to here. She went into the ditch on the left side of the road and hit a tree there.

Jaws of Life had to be used to get her from the wreck, which was reported at 10:55 p.m. She was taken to Community Memorial Hospital, Postville, where she later was pronounced dead.

The Highway Patrol said she was not wearing a seatbelt, but that the severity of the crash was such that she probably would have been killed anyway. The sheriff's office said they had not been able to determine the cause of the accident.

She was driving a 1986 Chrysler, which was reported completely destroyed.

Her obituary is on page 5 of this week's Herald.
