ARLINGTON - Funeral services for Howard F. Cordes will be 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at St John Lutheran Church, Arlington, with the Rev. Patti Knox officiating. Burial will be in Taylorsville Cemetery, Arlington, with graveside military rites performed by the Arlington American Legion Dean Harkin Post 219. Friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. Sunday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Arlington.
Mr. Cordes, 67, died Thursday morning, Nov. 27, 1997, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters, Oelwein, after a sudden illness.
He was born Aug. 22, 1930, in Mitchell, the son of Edwin and Frances (Nailor) Cordes. He was an airplane mechanic in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He married Ursula (Behrens) Watson on Dec. 9, 1956, in Arlington. Mr. Cordes was a longtime Arlington area resident where he had farmed for many years. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, the Arlington American Legion Dean Harkin Post 219 where he was also a past commander, the Farm Bureau, and a director of the Arlington Senior Housing Corporation.
Survivors include his wife, Ursula; three sons, Jeri (Debbie) Watson and Dennis (Janis) Cordes of Arlington, and Brian Cordes of Chicago; five grandchildren; 13 nephews; three Godchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth (Alvin) Schmidt of Osage and Genevieve Johnson of Urbandale; one brother, Russell Cordes of Green Bay, Wis.; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Cordes of San Diego, Calif., and Rosalyn Cordes of Germantown, Wis.; and his father-in-law, Otto Behrens of Oelwein.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, William and Glen.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
