HAWKEYE - Funeral services for Norman John Barth will be 11 am. Friday, July 4, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Chapel in Hawkeye, with the Rev. Troy Pflibsen officiating. Burial will be in Union Mound Cemetery, Sumner. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to service time Friday, at the funeral chapel.
Mr. Barth, 84, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at the Oelwein Health Care Center, following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 29, 1912, in Sumner, the son of Henry and Nellie Haag Barth. He graduated from Sumner High School in 1931, then toured the United States for a time with Bohunier Kryl concert band. Mr. Barth farmed for several years near Sumner, worked at the Air Force Base in Pratt, Kansas, and for Collins Radio Co. in Cedar Rapids. On May 6, 1945, he married Ruth Eleanor Garrison in Quasqueton. The couple lived in Cedar Rapids and Sumner before moving to Hawkeye in 1947. They owned and operated Barth Variety Store in Hawkeye for 23 years, selling the business in 1970. Following a stroke in 1974, Mr. Barth partially recovered and had remained active. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawkeye. He formerly had been a member of the Hawkeye Businessmen's Association and Conservation Club, where he had held offices. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Hawkeye and the Order of Eastern Star. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. An avid hunter, he enjoyed many years in his lapidary shop. He is survived by many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth, Sept 19, 1986; and one son, Douglas Norman, in infancy, March 6, 1949.
