HAWKEYE - Funeral services for Annamae Mitchell will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at St. Francis of Xavier Catholic Church, Hawkeye, with the Rev. John Purtell officiating. Burial will be in Hawkeye Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. Sunday at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. scripture service.
Mrs. Mitchell, 86, died Wednesday evening, Jan. 14, 1998, at her rural Hawkeye home after a lengthy illness.
She was born Nov. 22, 1911, west of Little Turkey, Chickasaw County, the daughter of James Patrick and Anna Louise Trout Barry. She graduated from Lawler High School in 1932 and taught school in several locations for nine years -- one became the first superior rated school in Fayette County. On June 11, 1941, she married Harold E. Mitchell at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sumner. The couple farmed in the Hawkeye area for many years. Mr. Mitchell died Jan. 18, 1984. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of St. Francis of Xavier Catholic Church, the St. Francis Rosary Society, and the Happy Hearts Club, the Fayette County Retired Teachers Association and the Hawkeye Senior Citizens.
Survivors include five sons, Thomas (Phyllis) of Hawkeye, Dean (Carol) of Waverly, Duane (Lynn) of State Center, and twins Bruce and, Brent, both of Hawkeye; three daughters and a niece, Deanna (Bill) Cook and Susan Keenan; both of West Des Moines, Betty (Larry) Hainz of Eau Claire, Wis., and Kathy (Wayne) Busch of Kansas City, Mo.; 22 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, three brothers, Andrew Barry of Cedar Falls, Ray Barry of Fairbank, John Barry of Oelwein; one niece and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; four brothers, Ed, James, and Joe Barry and one in infancy.
