HAWKEYE - Funeral services for Melba Bertha Wenthe will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawkeye, with the Rev. Troy Pflibsen officiating. Burial will be in, Hawkeye Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye, and one hour before services at the church Tuesday. Mrs. Wenthe, 78, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 1997, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, after a sudden illness.
She was born Sept. 30, 1918, in Center Township, Fayette County, the daughter of Samuel and Emma Boettcher Stapel. On Aug. 15, 1948, she married William Wenthe, Jr., at Trinity Lutheran Church, by the Rev. E.W. Kraemer. The couple farmed southwest of Hawkeye until January 1974 when they moved to Hawkeye. Mrs. Wenthe was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, being active in various women's organizations and holding offices. She served as church organist and was honored in 1993 for 50 years of service. She retired De. 3, 1995. She was a grocery clerk for 10 years prior to her marriage.
Survivors include one son, Wayne (Cheryl) of Hawkeye; four grandsons; one great-grandson; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill, Feb: 13, 1982; one sister, Selma Kendall; and one brother, Norman Stapel.
