ARLINGTON - Funeral services for Elon Charles DeWitte will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Strawberry Point, with the Rev. Dennis Juhl officiating. Burial will be in Cass Township Cemetery, Strawberry Point. Friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. Friday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Arlington, where there will be a parish scripture service at 7:30 p.m.
Mr. DeWitte, 86, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 11, 1995, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home, after a long illness.
He was born July 25, 1911, in Arlington, the son of Peter and Christina (Verbeke) DeWitte. He attended rural schools near Volga and Strawberry Point. On Jan. 31, 1934, he married Mary Ann Chapman at Lamont. Mr. DeWitte farmed near Lamont, then near Arlington for many years. The couple later retired and moved to Arlington. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Annie of Strawberry Point; three daughters, Marilyn (Milo) Frieden of Farmersburg, Audrey (Kenneth) Garetson of Lamont, and Janet (James) McCalmont of Littleton, Colo.; one son, Gary (Darla) DeWitte of Postville; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lucy Eden of Strawberry Point and Julia Chapman of Oelwein.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Lisa Frieden; a grandson, Tim Connor; great-grandson, Michael Frieden; one brother, Henry DeWitte; and three sisters, Clara Martelle, Mary O'Brien and Emma Millard.
