MAYNARD - Funeral services for Chester E. Cumberland will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Maynard, with the Rev. Dr. Charles Klink and the Rev. Bruce Bane officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein. Friends may call from 2 until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard and one hour before services at the church Wednesday. There will be a public Masonic service at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home by Hebron Masonic Lodge #374 A.F. & A.M. of Oelwein.
Mr. Cumberland, 89, died of cancer Friday morning, Jan. 3, 1997, at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
He was born Dec. 22, 1907, in Walker, the son of Howard and Alice (Sage) Cumberland. He graduated from Hazleton High School in 1925. On Nov. 6, 1934, he married Eva Shaw in Colesburg. Mr. Cumberland farmed in the Maynard area for many years and also worked for Riley Construction. He was a longtime Maynard resident, a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church where he was a former Sunday school teacher, a 67 year Mason and member of Hebron Masonic Lodge #374 A.F. & A.M. Oelwein since June 1, 1993, and was past worshipful master of Sunnyside Masonic Lodge #510 in Maynard 1948 and 1949. Mr. Cumberland was also past worthy patron of the Order of Eastern Star in 1958, past member of the West Central School Board, and a 4-H leader for six years in Smithfield Township.
Survivors include his wife, Eva; three sons, Cleo (Nancy) of West Des Moines, Gaylen (Ann) of Omaha, Neb., and Jerry (Randa) of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; two step-great-granddaughters; and one sister, Arlene (Frank) Poggenklass of Oelwein.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Edith Stoddard and five brothers, Elmer, twin brother Lester, Merle, Glenn and Forrest.
Memorials may be made in his name to the Kavanagh House, 900 56th Street, Des Moines, IA 50312.
