WEST UNION - Funeral services for Ervin Johnson will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the First Lutheran Church, Ossian, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union.
Mr. Johnson, 86, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at Grandview HealthCare Center, Oelwein, after a long illness.
He was born April 19, 1911, on a farm near Ossian, the son of John T. and Bertha Evenson Johnson. He was an Ossian area farmer. Upon retirement, he and his wife Evelyn moved to West Union.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of Oelwein; one daughter, Delores (Ronald) Rober of Dorchester; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bessie Johnson, Thelma Eide and Mabel Gullickson, all of Ossian; and one sister-in -law, Laurinda Johnson of West Union.

Ervin Johnson received his education at Dover #8 rural School. On March 11, 1937, Ervin married Evelyn Kleppe at First Lutheran parsonage. They farmed for over 30 years and moved to West Union, Iowa in 1972.

For many years, Ervin was known for his water-witching throughout the area. In their semi-retirement, both worked for Heying Firms Inc. and later Ervin mowed lawn for North Fayette School. Both served as janitors for Holy Name Parish. They were residents of Grandview Healthcare Center.

Casket bearers were Bruce Gullickson, Don Gullickson, Lyle Gullickson, Michael Johnson, Larry Johnson, Darrell Eide, and Dennis Eide.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Myron, in 1988.
