OELWEIN - Funeral services for George Edwin Jamison will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Christ United Presbyterian Church, Oelwein, with the Rev. John Kerr officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, with military graveside rites performed by Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9. Friends may call from 2 until 8 Wednesday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. A public Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home, conducted by Oelwein Hebron Masonic Lodge 374 A.F & A.M.
Mr. Jamison, 80, died at his home Monday morning, Oct. 13, 1997, after a short illness.
He was born Feb. 23, 1917, in Oelwein, the son of Harold and Mildred (Hacking) Jamison. He graduated from Oelwein High School in 1934 and the University of Iowa in 1938. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. On Oct. 12, 1940, he married Virginia Courtright in Oelwein. He owned and operated Jamison Lumber Company in Oelwein for many years, retiring in 1982. Mr. Jamison was a member and elder of Christ United Presbyterian Church. For more than 50 years he was a member of the Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9 and Hebron Masonic Lodge 374 AF & A.M. He was also a member of York Rite, the #374 Masonic Luncheon Club, and the El Kahir Shrine. He had served on the Oelwein School Board for 10 years including two years as board president. He was a member and past chairman of the Wood Products Company of Waterloo, board member of the former Oelwein Federal Savings and Loan, past director of Iowa Lumberman's Association for four years and former board member of the Oelwein Area Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia; one daughter, Juliann (James) Talley of Black River Falls, Wis.; one son, Alan (Barb) Jamison of Oelwein; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Marjorie Cannoy of Santa Clarita, Calif.; and one brother, Harold "Haddie" Jamison of Deming, N.M.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Jamie Leigh Talley; and a brother, Richard.
Memorials may be given in his name to Christ United Presbyterian Church, 100 East Charles, Oelwein.
