ELGIN - Funeral services for Alma Geneva Hanson will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at the East Clermont Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul G. Birkedal officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 until 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at the, Leonard Funeral Home in Elgin, and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.
Mrs. Hanson, 81, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, following a brief illness.
She was born April 28, 1916, on Springdale Farm, south of Gunder, the daughter of Harold and Gunille (Wettleson) Opsand. She graduated from Elgin High School, attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught country school in Marion Township for a short time. On June 1, 1938, she married Bernard Hanson. Together they farmed east of Elgin for many years. Mr. Hanson died Dec. 20, 1984. Mrs. Hanson has remained on the farm until her death.
Survivors include four sons, Harold, Enoch and Albert, all of Elgin, and Paul of St. Olaf; six daughters, Randine Evenson of Hawkeye, Margaret Suhr of Calmar, Elsie Walsh and Inga Hanson of Elgin, Cora Elrod of Edina, Minn., and Sylvia Feigenspan of Iowa City; 26 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Edblad of Wonewoc, Wis., and Norma Amundson of Clermont.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard; three sisters, Hildur Amundson, Rosella Burstrom and Lena in infancy; a son-in-law, Harley Evenson; and a granddaughter, Sarah Hanson.
