Mark B. Smith, Jr.
OELWEIN - Funeral services for Mark B. Smith, Jr. will be 11:30 a.m.Thursday, Feb. 26, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein, with the Rev. Frederick C. Fangmann officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, with military graveside services by the Oelwein American Legion, Ross Reid Post 9. Friends may call from 3 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein.
Mr. Smith, 64, died at home Sunday morning, Feb. 22, 1998, after a short illness.
He was born April 9, 1933, in Los Angeles, Calif., the son of Mark B. and Helen M. (Hanley) Smith. He graduated from high school and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Smith was a longtime Oelwein resident and self-employed carpenter. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9.
Survivors include two daughters, Kelly (Jerry) Harlin of Corona, Calif., and Renee Clifton of Yucaipa, Calif.; two sons, Mark B. Harris of Des Moines, and Paul G. Smith of Clinton; his mother, Helen of Oelwein; five brothers, Paul (Darlene) of Shell Rock, Ronald (Raunce) of Ozark, Ark., Victor and Patrick (Lori) both of Oelwein, and Leonard (Karen) of Dysart; four sisters, Peggy (Roger) Ehrke of Marion, Virginia(Percy) Logan of Joliet, Ill., Deborah Luerkins of Hiawatha and Kathleen (Michael) Roosa of Cedar Rapids; 12 grandchildren; and a special friend, Mary Lou Rueber of Oelwein.
He was preceded in death by his father and three brothers, James, Michael and Timothy.
A memorial fund has been established.
