OELWEIN - Funeral services for Harriet L. Newton will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, with the Rev. Robert Dagit officiating. Burial will be in Cass Township Cemetery, Strawberry Point. Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Newton, 80, died Friday morning, Feb. 27, 1998, at Grandview HealthCare Center, Oelwein, after a lengthy illness.
She was born Aug. 4, 1917, at Parkersburg, the daughter of Clifford and Anna Huntley. She graduated from Strawberry Point High School and then the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. In her early years, she taught kindergarten for a short time and was a bookkeeper for her father's store, H & N Market in Strawberry Point. She married Darwin M. Newton on Jan. 1, 1941, at Allison. The couple previously lived in Burlington and Boston, Mass., and moved to Oelwein after their retirement. Mrs. Newton was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the P.E.O., and the Strawberry Point American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include one niece Sandra (Dennis) Scharlau of Northbrook, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Zimpfer and Audrey (Virgil) Gilson, both of Oelwein; and one brother-in-law, Dale (Fran) Newton of Oelwein. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Darwin, Feb. 27, 1997; and one sister, Shirley Huffman.
A memorial fund has been established for the American Cancer Society.
