OELWEIN - Funeral services for Matthew Joseph Hefel will be 11 am. Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein, with the Rev. Frederick C. Fangmann officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 until 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein. There will be a parish scripture service at the funeral home 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Matthew, 2, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 1997, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, after a long illness.
He was born July 7, 1995, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, the son of Marty Joseph and Lee Ann (Hanson) Hefel. Matthew had struggled with medical problems his whole life. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include his parents, Marty and Lee Ann Hefel of Oelwein; grandparents, Mark and Bev Behnke of Sherrill, Eugene and Betty Hefel of Balltown; great-grandparents, Robert and Shirley Hanson of Dubuque, Leonard and Veronica Rhomberg of Dubuque, Alfred and Loretta Behnke of Durango, and Anna Errthum of Holy Cross; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Terry Hanson; and great-grandparents, Anthony Errthum and John and Marie Hefel.
A memorial fund has been established.
