OELWEIN -Funeral services for Carl T. Heller will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 18, at Zion Lutheran Church, Oelwein, with the Rev. Phyllis Wolkenhauer officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, with military graveside services conducted by the Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Sunday at the Hintz-Geilenfeld Funeral Home, Oelwein, and for one hour before services at the church Monday.
Mr. Heller, 62, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 1997, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters, Oelwein, after a lengthy illness.
He was born Nov. 12, 1934, in Oelwein, the son of
Carl and Anna (Wetzel) Heller. He graduated from Maynard High School in 1952 and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He graduated from Upper Iowa University, Fayette, in 1958. He received a masters degree in 1962 from Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. On July 11, 1959, he married Marlene J. Becker at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Maynard. He was a longtime teacher, guidance counselor, athletic director and coach at the Oelwein Junior High School, retiring in 1995. Mr. Heller was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9, the Civil Service Board, and Junior High Boys Athletic Union. He helped organize fundraisers for St. Judes Hospital and was a past member of the Oelwein Recreation Commission.
Survivors include his wife, Marlene; one son, Chad of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Heidi (Travis) Tafolla of West Liberty; one granddaughter, Grace Tafolla; six sisters, Marie Platte of Sumner, Frieda Hirsch of San Bernardino, Calif., Ruth Bartles of Cedar Falls, Esther Gates of Oelwein, Corinne Trotter of Cedar Falls, and Ann Rust of Barefoot Bay, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
