OELWEIN - Funeral services for Donald Myrel Bennett will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 5, at Grace United Methodist Church, Oelwein, with the Rev. Robert Dagit officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, with military rites performed by the American Legion Ross Reid Post 9 of Oelwein. Friends may call from 3 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Floral Hills Chapel Funeral Home, rural Oelwein.
Mr. Bennett, 72, died Wednesday morning, June 3, 1998, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home, of natural causes.
He was born Sept. 26, 1925, at Oran, the son of Elmer and Frances Chittenden Bennett. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Lucille Lamprecht of Sumner in 1946. She died of cancer in 1974. Mr. Bennett moved to Napa, Calif., where he met and married LuAnn Kanellis in 1977. She died in 1989. Mr. Bennett, a shoe storeowner and operator, then retired and returned to Oelwein to care for his mother. He married Elsie Fisher in May 1991, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. He was a third degree Mason of the Oelwein Masonic Hebron Lodge 374, A.F. & A.M. and a member of the American Legion Ross Reid Post 9.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie; two brothers, Paul of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Lee of Oelwein; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two wives, Lucille and LuAnn.
Memorials may be given in his name to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
