OELWEIN - Funeral services for Velma Ruth Allen will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 21, at the Stanley Union Church, with the Rev. Ken Dalke officiating. Burial will be in Long Grove Cemetery, Maynard.
Friends may call from 3 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, and after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Mrs. Allen, 79, died Monday afternoon, May 18, 1998, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters, Oelwein, after a lengthy illness.
She was born Oct. 8, 1918, at Maynard, the daughter of Purley and Pearl (Knight) Jennison. She graduated from Maynard High School in 1936. On Oct. 10, 1937, she married Loraine D. Allen at Maynard. Mrs. Allen had been a waitress at the Uptown Cafe and Hazleton Cafe. She was a member of Stanley Union Church and had lived in Mercy's Living Plus since June 1997.
Survivors include three daughters, Joan (Emery) Hillman of Oelwein, Margaret (Vernon) Sutton of Turtle Lake, Wis., and Mary (Dennis) Miller of Vinton; one son, Richard (Charlotte) of Marion; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Loraine, Aug. 27, 1996; one granddaughter, Shauna Rae; a brother, James Jennison; and a sister, Ruby Bell.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.
