OELWEIN - Funeral services for Sarah Margaret Ward will be 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, with the Rev. Ervin Hesterberg officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn, Cemetery, Oelwein. Friends may call from 3 until 8 p.m. Friday and after 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Ward, 81, died Thursday morning, Feb. 26, 1998, at Grandview HealthCare Center, Oelwein, after a brief illness.
She was born April 22, 1916, in rural Volga, the daughter of Owen and Nettie (Smith) Cummings. She graduated from Volga High School in 1933. On April 24, 1934, she married Clarence Sheldon Ward in Oelwein. The couple had formerly farmed in the Wadena, Edgewood and West Union areas. They had lived in West Union and moved to Oelwein in 1952. While Mrs. Ward lived in Oelwein, she worked for Sears and other businesses. She had been a member of several local card clubs.
Survivors include three sisters, Leota (Carroll) Turner of Arlington, LaVerle (Leo) Hutchinson of Coppell, Texas, and Celia (Richard) Opperman of Fayette; two sisters-in-law; Donna Cummings of Independence, and Fern Popenhagen of Oelwein; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence, Oct. 5, 1993; and one brother, Hugh Cummings.
