OELWEIN - Funeral services for Leo J. Schima will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 29, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, with the Rev. Richard B. Emery officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein. Friends may call from 3 until 8 p.m. Thursday, and one hour before services Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Schima, 86, died Tuesday morning, May 26, 1998, at the Peoples Extended Care Center, Independence, after a lengthy illness.
He was born May 16, 1912, at Solon, the son of Victor H. and Libbie (Kos) Schima. He married Dorothy Fenner on June 18, 1940, at Independence. Mr. Schima was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was an auto mechanic for many years, and in later years, was a handyman around Oelwein. He was a life member of the American Legion Ross Reid Post 9 of Oelwein, a member of the Blaisdell-Barnes V.F.W. Post 1725, and the D.A.V. He had been a resident of Peoples Extended Care Center since March 1998.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Oelwein; one son, Gary (Arlene) of Jesup; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Victor of Des Moines; two sisters, Marie Dibble of Independence, and Dorothy Campbell of Hazleton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Joe, Ernest and Irvin; and three sisters, Amelia Anderson, Irene Bartz and Rose Fetthether.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
