BRADENTON, Fla. - Laura R. Smith, 98, of Bradenton, Fla., and formerly of Oelwein, died Aug. 3, 1997, at a Farmington, Mo., nursing home. She suffered a massive stroke on July 3.
She is survived by a son, William C. Smith (OHS class of 1939) and his wife, of 808 53 St. E., #1OOC, Bradenton; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
During the 40 years she resided in Oelwein (1919 to 1959), she was Mrs. Arthur C. Smith. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, was active in the Ladies Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, and the Oelwein Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. Mrs. Smith worked at the election polls for many years and was a seamstress and sales clerk at the Ross Company. An avid golfer, she played at the Elks Country Club from the late 1940s until retirement in 1959.
