OELWEIN - Funeral services for Clyde Howard Bates will be 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at Christ United Presbyterian Church, Oelwein, with the Rev. John Kerr officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Hazleton. Friends may call at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, from 2 until 6 p.m. Saturday, 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday.
Mr. Bates, 82, died Thursday morning, Sept. 25, 1997, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters, Oelwein, after a short illness.
He was born Nov. 8, 1914, in Oelwein, the son of Roscoe C. and Lena (Smith) Bates. He married Laura Mildred Ohl on Nov. 24, 1938, at the First Christian Church, Oelwein. A lifetime Oelwein resident, Mr. Bates worked for Young's Plumbing and Heating for more than 35 years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of Christ United Presbyterian Church and was a board member with Oelwein Historical Society. He enjoyed tinkering in his shop, gardening, fishing, hunting, traveling and sports.
Survivors include his wife, Laura; one son, Mike (Tammy) of Oelwein; five grandchildren; a half-sister, Wanda (Raymond) Jacobson of Manito, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Opal Becker, and one brother, Roy Bates.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
